The rooms might as well be unlocked, they’re so easy to break in. But there’s so little of value here, the thief wonders why anyone bothers locking their doors at all.

But this one is depressing even by the standards the neighbouring bedsits have set. There’s an ancient kettle and a couple of mugs on a shelf by the sink. Some faded black clothes in the dresser. And a pinboard with a collage made of flyers and magazine cut-outs. Blurry images of a better life.

It wouldn’t be right, stealing from these people.
