‘I spy, with my little eye.’
Mariella pauses. She relishes the glances the girls are exchanging. The words always cause a flurry of worry, and today the mood shift is palpable. Mariella hasn’t chosen a victim yet. Tina, Kimberly and Jane are on the shortlist – Tina for the skirt that screams charity shop, Kimberly for a shade of lipstick Mariella hasn’t approved and Jane, as usual. If they stuck to her rules, she wouldn’t have to punish them.
Vanessa claps once. The girls get to their feet. Vanessa lunges forward, a pair of paper scissors in her fist.
‘Spy this.’
Gritty reboot of Mean Girls!
There’s a great sense of unease that permeates the story after the first line.

Although the ending is pretty ominous, I had to chuckle a little. And yes, it does remind me of Mean Girls. I like the part about Jane. She doesn’t need an explanation. She’s always in the running to receive Mariella’s taunts. Classic high school!

I’m thinking more The Craft than mean girls, or even Carrie… that’ll be my morbid mind at work again 🙂 Fab story.
