Unburdening

dock, mist rising from water, wooden plank, muffledMist rising from the sea takes the edge off any noise. It muffles the thud her cargo makes upon landing on wood. Nobody’s around this early in the morning but she’s thankful. It makes the bundle sound lighter than it is.

She doesn’t want to pick it up again. Yet she must carry it to the end of the pier. Only there is the water deep enough for the current to wash it out to the open sea. Only if she drops her burden into the water there will she know that it’s over, he’s gone and will never return.
