When I grow up, I want to be a sunflower. I want to stand in one place and turn my face with the sun. I want to be tall and bright and make people smile.
Dad says sunflowers will have a better chance than us. But by the time I’ve grown up, even they may need too much water. And they don’t actually turn with the sun. Cacti grows tall, he says. I’ll get to see them soon as we’ll move again and this time, it’ll be the desert.
Cactus, sunflower – I’ll take it, as long as it has roots.

It’s one of my pictures for FFfAW 50 – one I’d forgotten about. I love sunflowers and I’m looking forward to reading everyone’s stories.
I love this. You started it with high hopes, and then realisation that it may not last, and eventually being grounded – acceptance that the most important thing is having roots. Love, love it, Sonya. ❤

I think you wrote this for me! We moved far too often while I was growing up. And I didn’t know at the time how much I wanted roots – until I was older and realized how they anchor you and form you.

I’m glad you think so. If every story speaks to one person, I’ve done alright 🙂

Great job. I like how your character loves the sunflowers but when they move to the dessert she says Cacti or Sunflower it will grow as long as it has roots. Maybe sunflowers will grow if there’s water enough in the desert. Also, appreciate the morale of how having roots in life is important.

Great take on this prompt. It’s important to have roots. With plants, it keeps them grounded and that holds true for humans as well…..people like to belong.
