    I look beyond that moment, the smell of the sweat, the strain of my muscles, the speed of the ball, of the young men chasing a glory, a rocket soaring through the summer air.

    I was there with them on that exhilarating journey, full of hope and blue-sky optimism, an inexhaustible swelling of triumph.

    And finally, I was there on the bench, fated to try and grab hold of what went before, something ephemeral, a memory of heyday, a fullness of a lost, rich time.
